Four Tips for Selecting Mulch

Dark mulch sets off lighter flowers
1. Consider Your Purpose
Do you want to use the mulch to create a walkway, keep weeds down in your perennial bed, or soften the area under a swingset? There are lots of options to choose from, each with different properties your project may benefit from.
2. Don’t Forget About Rover
If you have a dog or other pets that might wander over to your newly mulched landscaping, beware! NEVER use cocoa mulch in areas where dogs may have access. It can be fatal to dogs if ingested!
3. Evaluate Your Plantings
If your plants have mostly dark-colored leaves, try to pick a more muted color of mulch to set off their color.

Use finer mulches with lacier leaves and flowers
Likewise, for lighter-colored plants and those with white veins (like some Hosta), a nice dark mulch will really call attention to their beauty.
4. Coordinate Textures
If you have a garden bed full of lacy, delicate plantings, you’ll probably like the way a finer mulch will complement their texture.
