What to Plant Now in your Home Garden

May 5th, 2010

Starting Your Springtime Home GardenGardening wisdom varies from region to region and, of course, gardener to gardener! Some say Memorial Day is the earliest one should move seedlings outdoors, plant annuals, or start direct seeding. Others use Mother’s Day as their guide (that’s this Sunday – don’t forget to send Mom a card!). It’s important to know the last frost date as well as soil temperature when aiming for a successful garden crop. Thankfully, The Farmer’s Almanac (a longstanding resource of great gardening information) has a fun online tool to help you decide what to plant when. Check out this link to the best planting dates for your zipcode.

If you live in Indiana or Connecticut, seeds can be started in the ground this week for many favorite backyard garden crops. These include varieties beans, beets, cucumbers, lettuce, radishes and squash. Cauliflower and cabbage seeds can start this week as well. Maybe this year you’re trying potatoes in your home garden. Now is the time to get them started! Don’t forget about those delicious herbs, which can be planted now, too. Anyone with kids, especially, might also be making space for a pumpkin patch. Pumpkin seeds can go into the ground now, and is a task most kids relish. If you’re really adventurous and have the space, give corn a try and start your row this week.

For great soil health in your home garden, add some organic compost. It will release the nutrients your garden needs during the growing season, boosting your backyard crop production.
